Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra was founded in November of 2012 by a few community members wanting a high-quality, large ensemble in the area as well as more educational and performance opportunities for the youth and their growing interest in music. The first concert was held the following Spring when the orchestra successfully performed A Child's Introduction to the Orchestra and All Its Instruments by Alec Wilder. Since then, CWSO has performed delightful programs such as Animal Voices: A Chamber Concert and A Haunted Symphony. In April, 2015 our Rare Masterpieces concert featured the Modern World Premiere of Frederick Brand's Fantasie for guitar and orchestra with renowned guitarist, Gary Stewart. Based in Charles Town, WV, we have grown steadily and now serve as a home to local professional musicians, amateur enthusiasts and advanced young students, and in the fall of 2015, the Charles Washington Youth Orchestra was formed for the youngest players in town.
It is the mission of this orchestra to provide a place for local musicians of all ages and abilities to rehearse and perform quality music for the benefit of the individual, this organization and, most importantly, the entire community. CWSO will endeavor to promote performances of fine arts and engage our young people and others with concerts throughout the area. The orchestra will encourage the advancement of its players and bring awareness to the importance of music education and appreciation in our homes and schools. Proceeds of concerts will be used both to sustain the orchestra and fund projects within the community that support arts awareness and education.
MUSIC DIRECTOR and CONDUCTOR- Camilo Pérez-Mejía originally hails from Medellín, Colombia and moved to the area in 2000, when he began his studies at Shenandoah University Conservatory in Winchester, VA.
